Media Education

Individuals that are well-informed, engaged, and analytical of the images portrayed about them is key to a democratic and empowered community. In the current climate, being a consumer of media is far more encouraged that being a critical participant.

So, what is media? How does it impact our lives? How are Latinos specifically portrayed in the media? How do those portrayals impact individual and community self-esteem and social agency?

The Minnesotano Media Empowerment Project is developing curriculum for adults, teens, and youth to explore these questions and to train individuals and groups on effective ways to engage with the media in their area. We will offer these curriculums to the general public in a downloadable format as they become available.

Our first curriculum is written and is being tested!

During the fall of 2007, we developed two curricula geared towards Youth Media Empowerment. One is an 8-week course and one is a series of two workshops that begin with the question: What is Media? And go all the way to writing letters to the editor and other forms of media activism.

The workshops are being tested in the spring of 2006 and will be available for download off of our website in the Fall of 2007. The eight week curriculum will be tested in the Fall of 2007 and will be available soon thereafter.
